Totally Retro

16 Mar

Ret-ro

adj.

1. Involving, relating to, or reminiscent of things past.

Retro style is a throwback to the streamlined, modern designs made popular throughout the mid-twentieth century. During these inspired decades, distinctive new styles emerged which left a lasting impression and continue to be widely enjoyed as retro style.

The vibrant yet soothing colour palette of retro home design is one of its key features and very ’in’ right now. Popular retro colours include:

  • Aqua
  • Yellow
  • Red
  • Blue
  • Pink
  • Turquoise
  • Black
  • Mint Green

Retro can be described by taking very little of the past few decades and creating a current design that is both modern and fun and because ideas can grow, your home décor is a matter of personal interpretation of the past and therefore completely unique.

Modern retro interior design style also utilizes timeless combinations of black and white checkerboard patterns in addition to red and white motifs such as those seen in Coca-Cola memorabilia.

Key retro design elements include polished chrome, rounded corners, laminate surfaces, linoleum, and vinyl. Some of the fun, kitschy items that are often seen in a retro home design include jukeboxes, bowling collectibles, and vintage tiki or Hawaiian décor.

Coffee tables are usually seen in curvy, kidney shapes, and dining tables are typically round or oval. Popular retro chair styles include the Eames lounge chair, the butterfly chair, the Barcelona chair, and the tulip chair. These futuristic designs prove to be very comfortable despite their avant-garde appearance.

Morph Me

7 Nov
Remember those cheeky lil chappies who the public loved but Tony Heart despaired of? Well now we can have them in our own homes and they are still causing mayhem…

The Contemporary Home are selling Morph Bookends, with Morph at one end, and his buddy Chas (did anyone actually know he had a name?) at the other.

I think I will be purchasing these for a bit of retro banter, especially as The Contemporary Home send their products through DHL (happy days!) instead of Royal Mail (boooo!)

I have always been impressed with this company’s products so I am glad to see them selling retro stuff alongside both ‘out there’ and mainstream items.

Ooohh yea I fancy a bit of that chandelier!
